Spam or unsolicited junk mail filters are used make a determination of whether or not unsolicited email is being received. There is no absolute way to separate unsolicited email from regular email. The Internet Service Provider (ISP) from which the email originated. Some ISPs have tolerant policies towards the senders of unsolicited mail.

The type of mail server from which the message originated. Mails servers located on dynamic IP addresses or that contain "open relays" tend to be originators of unsolicited mail.

The domain from which the email originated. Some companies are known to send large volumes of unsolicited mail.

The content of the message. The occurrence of certain words or phrases in an email can be considered as spam.
